I need to buy a new battery for my trolling motor and have looked on-line at all the different types now I.E. Gel, ANG, Optima etc. and was wondering what everyone thought of the battery that they are using. What do you like and what do you dislike. I need one for a MinnKota 54lb thrust 12 volt.

Thanks for your opinions.

I have a 24v system and went the cheap route. I bought two Wal-Mart 12v. They are priced really well like $45 a peice, and they hold juice really well, and will push my 22' Century really well.(Motorguide Greatwhite 71lb).

The only downfall is every 11 months almost to the day, you have to buy two more. I don't know enough about electricity to understand why. So I just replace them once a year.

I've bought cheap ones before and I have also bought blue top Optimas. I can not really tell a difference in how long either one of them last. I think it really depends on how much you use them and what kind of charging system you use.

I have a 24v trolling system and use the walmart batteries. I started using them years ago when a friend of mine on the B.A.S.S. circuit explained why he used em. "The other batteries may be good but if one messes up at 4 in the mornin', who's gonna replace it? There is ALWAYS a walmart open 24 hrs within driving distance of most ramps"

From what I understand, Most batteries are made by only a few major manufacturers anyways and then labeled privately for the store buying/selling them http://www.batteryfaq.org/

Have two gel deep cycles and have had them about 3 years and worth every dime.  I do have a in-line battery charger .  Don't know if that has anything to do with it .Still going strong though .

I got a flyer yesterday from West Marine, they have a 665 cca Seavolt regularly 89.99 for sale for 49.99.  Suposed to be a "no splill" that can allow angles up to 45 degree (perfect while leaving the pass). Other than something like that, I'm with the others, 40 buck cheapie and I'm ready to roll, but I always have a dual battery rig, and I even carry a rechargeable 12 volt jump with me just in case. Good luck with whatever you decide.....   T

Agree with Walmart batteries but I use a battery tender that slow charges them and have not had a problem. I have a 12v 50lb Minnkota Endura trolling motor on a 14 ft Jon boat (not a lot of weight to move around).

3- Gp 31's on a 36V system. I always suggest the biggest batteries that can be installed up to a point.

Use ONLY true deepcycle batteries. No combo start/deepcycle.

I have a small 12V trooling motor but I have 2-Gp 29 batteries in parallel to make one big battery. Gp-29's are rare these day's. That's why we went to Gp-31's on Joel's boat.
