Fished for a few hours this morning in Blackwater with my friend Capt. Jim Taylor from Punta Gorda. I needed to show him some redfish here so that next week he would show me the "promised land" in Pine Island Sound and Charlotte Harbor for the FLW. The water was cloudy in some areas and tanic in others. Started out slow for the first half hour then started seeing lots of "muds" off the bow. We drank some coffee and let the fish settle before moving in for the surprise attack. Ended up with 5-6 fish in the 20"-24" range. Went another 100 yards and jumped up 30-40 fish. We poled down and watched them settle. Poled to the fish and stuck another 6 fish in as many casts. The fish were all around 24" and pretty well built, which means that have been eating well. All redfish were caught on 1/8oz. Johnson gold spoons and 5" Gulp! Jerkshads in the trusty camo color. Very, very slow presentation.

Note: In the slick conditions and dirty water, the redfish were visible in the form of wakes and mud puffs on the bottom. When you see either, stop the boat and let them settle. Take note of where and in which direction they have moved. They are very difficult to catch when being chased but when they stop and get comfortable again, they are a very easy target. Just be very quiet and very patient.

Total: 11-12 Redfish. All fish released.

Whats the story about Rick Murphy not fishing FLW events this year?

As a Maverick team member with Rick and Scott, I have heard small slivers of gossip. Rick told Scott at the end of the 2007 season that he was done tournament fishing. One month later, he(Rick) was teamed up with Geoffrey Page. That's all I know about that.

Oooohhhh, the gossip!!
