Finally everthing came together with the weather and our work schedule so off it was out of Dauphin Island on the Grady White.  Got to BGH at 615 or so just before is broke daylight, a little chilly but slick calm and a great forecast had our hopes up.

Headed due south about 50-60 miles to some rocks in hope of finding some nice grouper and aj's.  First spot showed lots of fish but we managed only a couple of short aj's.  Off to the next spot.  Fish turned on for us and we caought about 15 or so aj's one of which went 40 lbs and another one about 22 lbs.  Final tally 2 aj's and one ncie gag.  Catch of the day was this nice 30 lb gag on a diamond jig 3 ft off the bottom in about 285 ft of water. Put up a pretty good fight till we put her on the deck.

Later on in the day we finally found some of the snapper and caught and released 15 or so trying to catch more grouper.  Were pulling them in left and right from 300 ft+.  Vented all of them and they went back down to the depths no worse for wear.

Here is a pic of 40 lb aj with some jewelry in his mouth (3 circle hooks and leftover leader from some unlucky fisherman).  All in all not as many keepers as we had hoped but a beautiful january day none the less.

Final shot of the "Lake of Mexico"  ~55 miles out

Man that is a pretty gag! That is some boat too. What kind of gas mileage do you get at cruise? All the yamaha site has is the performance report with twin 350's. I remember the thread when you were getting the boat. Thanks for the report and the pics.

I figured you guys were out there somewhere for sure putting a dent in the deep water grouper population.  Still havent hgot a hold on the deep dropping as of yet.  Probably should have left the aj's and headed out just a few miles or so and given it a shot.  Only bait we had were squid and some old pogies.  Tried to catch some live baits on close in spots with no avail.  Wanted to put the kristal reel to use.  Maybe we'll get another day in the near future and definitely headed to 600ft or so and drop down.  Actually got the aj's on natural bottom.  Tried to get our limit on the 55-60 mile rigs and only managed small ones????  90+% of all fish caught on diamond and butterfly jigs.

At 4800 rpm's we burn 25 gph at 26-28 knots or so depending on sea condition and load on boat. On average we get 1.2mpg  not bad for a 18000lb boat.  by the way the 350's burn the same amount of fuel on the grady spec sheet but run lower rpms at the same cruising speed I believe.

Hey fishsticker, you guys were right behind us at the landing that evening.  We were in the 21 cape horn.  I spoke to someone in your group and he mentioned you'd gotten a few nice fish.  It struck me as funny how nicely dressed the guy was after a day offshore.  He was clean and pretty like he was ready for dinner out.  We tend to get a little bloody and slimy!

Gland you guys got to take advantage of that weather.  Only a few other trailers at Billy that day.

Danny

The shower on the cape horn tends to be a little chilly in the winter so we go without!  That is an awsome boat though (the Grady).  I could head down the Florida coast in that and stay gone for days.
