Grouper tactics in winter?

Had a good season on grouper this year on some natural bottom (spring and summer). Was curious to know how and what ways will get the winter bite. Live pin fish has been my bait of choice, but these will be hard to come by late Dec.-Feb. I'm guessing the next best thing would to catch your bait in the same area you are fishing for smaller reef fish. I have been thinking about tipping jigs with bobo strips...well this work or are winter fish to slow and non aggressive??

Just trying to expand my grouper horizon.

High Vis Line thoughts

I would like to switch over to high visability line for trolling so I can see the line better. I also want to be able to bottom fish. Anyone notice less bottom fish on the hook when using high visability line. This assumes a leader of clear mono or fluorocarbon.

We recently purchases a used castnet that has red tape all around the weights. Is there some reason the red tape is on there; any advantage to leaving it there?

What do you guys think about this article in the MS Press Register(south MS local paper). I think it could benefit fishing in a lot of ways but using oil rigs for structure could pose problems for fishing around the rigs. I'm not sure about all the logistics but could be good. They do something like this already for speckled trout in south MS, they raised them on land and release the hatchlings and it seems to have help catches.

inshore wants an offshore trip

I have some friends commin in (8th 9th 10th) and would really like to take them on a 8 to 12 hour fishing trip. 5 people charter trip out of P-Cola

I've never been overly enthusiastic about bottom fishing so was thinking blackfin, bonita, or AJs..etc..don't have enough time to go to Venise for a rig trip...I would really appreciate some advice, any suggestions on a charter outfit? Would really appreciate your thoughts guys.

I haven't tried targeting blackfin and would like some advice from Destin Pass. Where to start and what to use. What time of year? Also best areas for grouper and AJ's. I have been trying public #'s culverts, wrecks in 100'-120' depths. Any help please. Even if it is public #'s that I should start hunting around for #'s or for AJ's good places.

First trip to the Mass

Hey guys I think (weather pending) I am going to try and take my first trip to the Mass this weekend.

I plan to troll the pass some for kings and maybe see if I can get some snapper, Trigger, grouper etc..off the mass.

However I dont have a GPS (so not asking for #'s) but I know from what ive read that the Mass can be tricky because the bouy isnt marking it well and that the wreck is shallow and at time visable (I dont want to hit it)

So if anyone can offer suggestions on what to look for and where to fish once I get out there I would really appreciate it.

Would also like suggestions on bait, tactics, etc.. for targeting kings and grouper I havent caught either of those two yet so all new to me.

My questions are where is it, what is it, is it a lot of rocks/ledges, do you drift it or anchor on it? Also, what can I expect out there, fish wise. Any info will be very helpful before I head out. Wahoo High speed troll

I was wondering if anyone has had luck with high speed trolling for Wahoo. I tried it with trolling weights a while back and my gear was not stout enough to handle it. Now I have a better rod/reel combo and was wondering if Ballyhood lures etc. trolled at 15 knots works around here. I have read in works in the Bahammas but what about here?

I am wondering if this is state waters or federal waters. I know it is close, either way. I just got my boat fixed, it took a few months, but I'm back. I am wanting to catch a snapper or 2? any suggestions? I am going in the morning and I wanna be back before football starts. I am thinking about going to the hole, but it has been many months. Is this state waters? Has anyone caught anything from here lately? Thanks for any advice.

Party Boat in Pensacola?

I called Zeke's and they said the Zeke's Lady hasn't been out in over a month due to lack of people. Is there another party boat in the Pensacola area I could look into? I'm looking for maybe a 6 hour trip, not too much $$, just something where she can have some fun and catch some fish.

my brother went deep dropping this weekend in 500 to 700 ft water and caught these two fish. i think they are a spiny dogfish and some type of a cusk eel. the discolorization was because of it being on ice so long they caught it last night and did not get back till this afternoon. am i close?

Okay, so yesterday a friend of mine caught a fish in 530' of water that he described as (no pic yet sorry) looking like a red snapper (body about 18") with yellow stripes and yellow fins but the fins (pectoral and dorsal) had yellow streamer type things coming off of them like a Rooster fish... anyone have a clue?

I finally took the boat out to the nipple Saturday. I've been gradually venturing further and further out to make sure my boat was sound since it's a 95 model. It's done well and I decided to go for it.

Boat ran great but the fishing was terrible. I've been researching and learning all I can for months. Most of what I've learned was about baits and trolling techniques. I got the outriggers, all the recommended lures, trolling speeds and thought I was set and just had to get to the spot.. WRONG.. Man, I got out there and instantly realized I don't know jack.. I go to these places people have recommended like Yellow Gravel, Nipple, and so on, I put all my expensive ass lures on these insanely overpriced outriggers and troll over the spots then nothing... so now what? Do I troll in circles all day around the spot or what.. And let's not forget that I'm not a rich man so it took a lot for me to dump all this cash into my fishing gear to get no fish..

I came back Saturday a little discouraged and just about threw my new reels against the boat.. I'm calm now and think I need to take someone more experienced with me next time...

As soon as the weather looks good I'd like to make another trip. I'll cover all fuel, bait, beer, food, ect. My boat is 21' Cape Horn, not new but in good shape. If any experienced fishermen would like to take a trip with me please let me know. I have all the lures that have been recommended plus some that just looked like they might work.. I would like to target Mahi and wahoo ect. All I need is someone to show me the ropes.. I live in Daphne and usually launch out of Orange Beach.

First Trip to the Edge

Went out saturday 9/27 to try out fishing on the edge for the first time, was hoping to get to shake off the grouper hex that has been put on me.all summer I have got 1 legal scamp and he was barely legal

I never found any bottom that looked like a ledge, or anything that looked like rocks, lumps, ridges

the bottom looked like a smoooooth slope and we didn't mark any fish at all, looked and looked and looked.We were south of the avocet where it drops off from 200- 350'

someone give me some tips on fishing the edge, I'm hungry for some grouper

Gave up and came back in, got 2 keeper AJ's, threw back some whopper snapper, got 2 short red grouper, everywhere we went flipper ate every single throw back.
