FWB Report 11/20/08 - Cold and windy but got fish

Weather man was wrong about the winds..about 10mph off from the 3-4mph predicted. Could'nt check a few of my spots do to the wind but managed to scrape up a limit. Still alot of shorties out there....was thinking the big ones were already gone till i seen Frayed Knots post. Ill have to try a couple more trips before I break out the rod and reel for the winter.

Took my next door neighbor and his boys for one last gigging trip. Went to a good funnel spot in 3 foot of water and anchored up. Easy pickings. All we had to do is stick them as they moved through. Not much fun IMO. I prefer to hunt for them.

Mobile Bay Thursday Night --First Post

I have been reading the forum for a year now and this is my first post. I have finally gigged enough flounder worth posting.

I picked these up in Mobile Bay last night. We started about 8:30 and it was slow until about 9:30 and then it was on! It slowed down again around 11:30 and we called it a night around midnight. We gigged 21, but only managed to put 16 in the boat. Damn rookies!!! We had a 6.5 pounder, two 6 pounders, and a 5.5 pounder. The largest one was 23.5 inches. No, the gut shots did not belong to me. I told my partner,"go for the head man!!!"

I will be out there again this weekend. I will keep you posted if successful.

FWB Report 11/13/08 - Got a Few

I only got 3 but was only out from 5:30 to 8 because the wife expired my kitchen pass and was bitchin for me to get home. Light SSE winds and water was pretty clear. There were quite a few rain clouds but no rain...bright moon when it slipped between clouds. I saw plenty barely legal ones. My biggest was 22".

We went out for a couple hours last night stuck 1 flounder and this beast. Well see how she eats. Always wanted to stick something with some ass to it. Doubt I will do it again.

With the winds shifting to the NW and gusty, fishing the beach may be your best bet. Pompano, blues, reds, and an occasional flounder over 5 pounds will be the usual targets in November. Don't overlook the north side on the bay, as it will be protected from the winds. Baitfish, in certain spots, are still available. The temperature is going to drop into the low 30s this weekend, and should spark another flounder run. Sharpen your hooks and gigs, as the floounder season tapers off. The grub/gig challenge seems to be the event of the fall in Northwest Florida. Several very nice fish have been posted recently with more to follow. This will wrap up the weekend report. The only way to know is to get out and go!!!

Well I felt a little funny when I showed up at Navy Point landing and there wasn't another truck in the parking lot......that may be a first for the 12th day of November! Wind was fairly strong out of the E-SE and the bay was pretty roughed up. We searched high and low with falling pressure and falling tides......to no avail. We gigged one lonely soldier who was making a mad dash to the Pass!

Does anyone else believe that this has been an "off" year compared to the last 5-6 years of floundering in this area? I know we haven't really gotten the hard cold fronts that are associated with pushing the fish out each fall....but damn, it's been pretty slim pickens.

The one we did get was the biggest one that I've gigged this fall..

11-10 report, quality but no quantity

I decided to go for a quickie last night right at dark and took my brother in law for his first gigging experience. We fished for about 2 hours and saw a total of 3 fish. He missed the first fish that we saw around 5:45, which was unfortunately the biggest one of the night :banghead but we found 2 more real nice fish, 21.5" and 23.5". They weighed on my hand scale just under 4.5 and just over 6 lbs as both were real fat fish.

I have not talked to anyone who fished after the tide started going out, hopefully the fish started moving a little bit better later last night.

We are leaving out tonight heading toward freeport. We always get some nice sheeps and a bunch of mullet where we are going. I was wanting to know if the 331 bridge is to far up in the back of the bay to still find flounder? I live in Bama and don't get to go often enough to ever figure out the flounder. Some good place to put in around PCB to Destin would be really helpful. I have about given up on flounder and becoming a sheeper. lol

My buddy came over from gulfport to gig some flounder friday night. I wish I could have put him on some more but we did manage to get a few decent fish. 10 flounder 2 mullet 1 large sheephead. Biggest flounder was 6lbs 6oz

Left the dock at 8:30 and met up with FINZ who had already stuck 4 in the 20 inch range:bowdown . After I got my first fish in the boat my gig snapped off:reallycrying but luckily FINZ had a backup so I wasn't SOL. He limited out shorty after that and headed back in. I aimed at reaching my limit too but fell short by two. This was the first time I stuck any flounder in the past 8 or 9 trips, so needless to say I was happy with my haul.

Frags- 8

Largest- 18 inches

Lesson Learned- Beat FINZ to the spot or go on different days:doh

Went out gigging with my buddy Tanner, on saturday night i got off work at 9pm, and we had the boat set up and in the water at Navy Point by 10 pm....

well, we covered a hell of a lot of water... we pushed for about 6 hours and only gigged 4.... i missed a real good'n ... he was a bit far to my right, and instead of just repositioning the boat and getting closer, i tried to whack 'em from about 12 feet away... that was a mistake... i missed like no other...

after about 3 hours and passing by several redfish, i grabbed my inshore rod and started sight-fishing reds as we poled along... we caught 12 between the 2 of us...

tally for the night,

4 flounder (biggest just under 4lbs...)

3 trout

12 redfish (kept 2, 26"ers)

8 mullet.

Friday Night Flatties!!

Loaded up the old Pathfinder Friday afternoon and met Scott (LiteCatch) and Tobe at the house around 5:30 p.m. for our first flounder gigging trip this year. Was a beautiful night with calm seas and light wind, not too many boats at the Pickens area and we started our search for flatties around sunset. Night started out slow with no fish spotted for a couple of hours. Finally put the first fish in the cooler and had steady action till about midnight. Ended up with 15 fish, biggest 21 1/2" and weighed 4 1/2 pounds on the boga grip. Great night with a even better crew....although LiteCatch was fooled by some Bat Rays wearing a flounder costume for Halloween!! :poke

First Time Gigging Report

Went out for the first time last night on the boat I inherited from my Pap Paw and didn't see a whole lot of fish. We's did manage to stick a few fat flounders, 3 red fish, and 5 mullet. We fried thems flounder up today for lunch and they was sooooo good! Here's a pic of me with my fishes! Me and my cousin is going again tonight after the football game and hopefully we going to get em again! Thank goodness the gas prices be falling!

Waded from 730pm til about 1015pm. Area we targeted was West of Navarre on the North side of the ICW. Didnt see a one..... Tried a stab at a mullet and missed. Saw a redfish that was a slot fish, didnt stab it..... :popcorn

Did manage to kill 6 NASCAR beers in the process so all in all not a bad night.

If someone has a walkin hole they dont mind sharing I would me much appreciative....

So let me hit spell check and my grammar editor for all you haters out there. For those of you who offered constructive criticism on the gigging of the redfish, thank you.

First of all, I wrote the previous post in a hurry and didn't proof read it. Second, for those of you who think a black man can't fish/gig fish and want to use a public forum to blast me, well that's very shallow minded. Third, I am new to the sport and didn't know you can't gig redfish......my bad, won't happen again. And for those of you who have never seen blood coagulate after being stuck....I don't know what to say to you. Here's another picture of the backside of the redfish and flounder.....and yes I was wearing my lifejacket to teach my son a little safety!

Left the dock at 8 and returned at 12:30. Water got choppy and wind picked up at about 11 and made it a little harder to get around. I tried a new stretch of shore and it produced well...the largest was 20".

Took my buddy out last night to let him stick a few fish. The night started out a little more windy than I expected and definately had a lot more boats to compete with than I have lately. We ended up cutting the night short at about 10:30. 11 flounder and 1 mullet.

Thinking of trying to stab a couple flatties sat evening but not sure if the conditions will be good enough... they are calling for 10-15 mph wind increasing to 15 NNE late and light to moderate chop in the bay.

Thinking I might try it anyway and hope the weatherman hit his crack pipe a little too hard and its nice out there.

I'm going to give it a try tonight with long pants (not shorts like last Saturday) and a jacket. I just drove over the bay and it was dead calm with a fair amount tide coming in. With a new moon and the drastic tidal sweep we just had, something got to happen. I just hope it happens to be some stabbing.

I fished Monday night with out any issues from it (Coleman Powermate) then after making it all the way to my new honey hole Tuesday night the Coleman did not have any out put. Needless to the say it is not worth fixing it when I would have the same problem again do to the amount of amp draw my setup has. So I bought a new generator and thought I would pass the information along incase someone is looking at buying a new generator.

It is a Kipor Sinemaster IG3000, Carpenters Campers is the local dealer and Seville Power Equipment is the local service center. I needed a generator with a 30 amp outlet and that was not very loud. After researching and talking to the local service center about the warranty coverage and parts I was sold on it. I fished 7 hours with it and used less than 1 gallon of gas. I'm very pleased so far and at this point would recommend it to anyone in the market for a generator. It will set you back a thousand dollars! Here are some pictures and a link to there web site.

FYI: using the 30 amp plug fires all 6 HPS lights in less than 5 seconds!!!!

Left out about dark and headed to the gigging hole. We set out my flounder net and started gigging. And after some generator problems we started gigging a few. Ended up with 11 and 14 mullet and one redfish. Went to pick up my net and it was nowhere to be found. So if anyone picked up a 300 ft stretch of gillnet around Dauphin Island its mine. Please no bashing about the gillnet. Just like to set it out and see what I get. Never got more than 4 so I doubt I am decreaseing the population. The biggest fish we gigged was 3.11. They were all above 2.5 except one. Nice thick fish and full of eggs. I will try to post pics again

10-28-08 Flounder Report

Went out at dark last night to the Ft. Pickens area (which by now is usually looking like a Christmas Tree) and surprisingly enough....there were only 4 boats and 3 walkers on the beach. The tide was moving, the north wind was blowing but there wasn't a nare fish in sight.......we must not have been holding our mouth's quite right! We pulled out of the water a little after 10pm and only had one 12 inch fish to show for our efforts......along with some soaked feet from the bow washing waves that were crashing over the front of the boat :-)

Also, in all the years I've been fishing at night.....I've never been stopped by the Marine Patrol....until last night! Right before we left he came creeping up on us....checked us, was very nice about it and took off. I saw him back in his truck at Navy Point when we got back to the landing....

Went last night and had our limit by 10:30. 20 flounder,6 big stone crab claws and 18 blue crabs. Not a bad night but most of the fish were small. Flame away on my small fish if you like but they fry up just fine!

Got out Saturday night and ended up with one 15" Gulf flounder. Seen a ton of juvies 8"-10" range...with all these babies i've been seeing we may have a real good next year.
