Considering the temps and it being the middle of the week, I expected few anglers. Wrong! I headed past the eyesores(Portofino), and it seemed like all the decent real estate was occupied. I found an area that seemed to have a little depth and set up. There was absolutely no action. Sandfleas were really tough to come by, too. There were a ton of mullet cruising the beach close. Aside from that, I kept a light rod rigged for the passing bo-bo schools. I did manage to hook 3 fish-landing 2 of them. It was definitely some welcome action. I left around 11:00 and scouted some places for early next week(better tides, weather). Past Peg Legs I found some HUGE concentrations of mullet in very close to the beach. It might be worth checking out for some of you. Good 50 minute walk/climb from the parking area.

Nice day overall, 3 people were out there already, were catching mangrove snapper on the ocean side about 30 yards from the end. Looked like they were using live shrimp.

I was going to try to catch some too, but really didnt have much luck. Tried Gulp shrimp and squid, managed to get one and several bites. All were in or near the rocks. Got snagged several times on the rocks. Swells were coming in from the west plus believe the wind was from the west too, so, the ocean side of the jetty got a little wet to fish from. The bluefish were there but not in the numbers as a few days ago. Went to a silver gotcha and managed to get 3. Several boats stopped by, only saw one catch anything, nice redfish, looked like they were using live bait.

The east jetty looked busy

Largest pod of porpoises i ever saw came through, must have been over 15-20 of them. They were jumping and looked like they were trying to herd something toward the jetty. Interesting to watch.

Then a school of Bonita (Little Tunny) showed up and stayed maybe 30 minutes. Threw on them with a gotcha but none ever took it.

Did foul hook 2, good fight, will save them for bait.

Long walk back, but always enjoy the jetties, good place to relax and you always see something interesting. The wind was kicking, it was muddy, and cold. We didn't expect much with cold wind or to stay long. But we caught a nice whiting and two reds on fresh shrimp with a double drop rig:). One red was 25" and the other 21". The pic is the 25". Remember to take a kid fish-n, someone took you.
5 Pompano; Pcola Beach 11/16/08

My brother, a Marine, just got back from deployment in Iraq. I took him to Pcola beach to try for some Pompano. We caught five! Took them home and ate them that night. We fished east of Portofino. Caught all fish between 3:30 and 5:00. I saw no other fisherman out there. Odd for such a beautiful day.

Caught all pompano on sandfleas.

Destin Jetties

Went to the jetties last week. Mangrove snapper were biting well as usual and also pulled in a nice pompano. Two guys fishing at the end were pulling in the pompano about every other cast. Best dinner I've had in a while. Stopped at the spur jetty first, tide was going out at a pretty good climp. Stayed about 45 minutes, nothing.

Headed out to the East Jetty, older gentleman on the end was hauling in a little of everything, mainly bluefish plus the largest pinfish I have ever seen, over a foot long, maybe a pound

He had a 5 gallon bucket full of blue fish and mangrove snapper.

He was fishing at the southeast end and we fished on the pass side, nothing. used cut bait on the bottom, dead shrimp, gotchas, etc. Anyways, he decided to leave (His bucket was full) and we moved over to the ocean side of the end. Saw schools of bluefish roaming about 10' off the rocks but they would not hit anything. Also, the tide had stopped moving, believe we were at low tide. Nothing for an hour or so except for these guys.

Tide started picking up again heading back in and the bluefish bite was on. Numerous schools of them on both sides of the jetty.

Just threw anything silver out there and they would hit it. Did get one small mangrove snapper next to the rocks on Gulp shrimp.

Never did see any bait schools. I just had to solve that issue and go out to the beach. My friend Trevor went with and helped out with the flea raking. After an hour and a half, my rod doubles up and almost comes out of the spike. I run to it and fight it to the beach. I see the fish swimming in the waves and its a pomp! Measured out to be 16.5in. Trevor then catches two, like its no big deal. His were 13 and 15in. We had a couple more hook-ups and that was it. All caught on dead shrimp and sandfleas.

Sunday - Pensacola Beach

Sunday morning we didn't feel like putting the boats in the water, and with all the Pomps being caught lately we decided to go give it a try. I took a break from slingin lures and worked some shrimp around the rocks and there were lots of small black snapper a few decent ones in the mix along with undersized grouper. I caught a couple small grouper and a damn ray, but the highlight to our morning was the 36" bonnet shark. We found one nice school of ewlys at about 7am, right off the rocks (which were very slippery). When I threw the cast net I slipped off balance and kerplunked right between the rocks, gouging my palm and slicing my ankle. That was the only bait school we saw this morning. No more anywhere on the shoreline. We caught the shark and the ray off of a 6" fish that resembled a lady fish. Everything else was landed off suffocated ewlys (forgot the aerator). We went past portofino and scouted around. The spot we finally settled on was an area where the channel was funneled/squeezed between a shore point and a bend in the sandbar. First cast, 13" pomp. I started gathering some fleas, when dad sighted another pomp, presented a bait, BAM! 2 pomps. About 30 minutes passed and dad hooked a nice fish. My rod closest to him bows up, and then the next rod in the line goes off. That's the kind of chaos I love about pomp fishing. We landed all 3 pomps and hi-fived. MY dad doesn't get out too much, and he was grinning like a kid-AWESOME! We set out our baits again and proceeded to get bit every 10-15 minutes until we left. We only kept 6 fish between us, but we released 4 or 5 more. Just as we were packing up a pod of bobo's came in close(within 20 yards of shore) busting bait. We fired a couple of jigs into the fray but no takers. No matter-the day was great by any measure. The fish were caught on fresh shrimp and live fleas(1 on a jig), and we fished from 9:30-11:45. The afternoon bite should be strong, and maybe tomorrow morning before the front. Basically, get out there and catch some if you can. Dad kept 2 fish(16.5" and 15.75") and here are mine (all 13-15")

Tight lines,

Jason Purdy

Pensacola Beach 11/5

Met Dave (Naclh2odave) out at Pensacola beach in hopes for some fish. It was a georgeous morning with great weather and calm conditions. It seemed like everyone else had the same idea as we did as well. There were tons of people out past Portafino.

Unfortunately all we had was good weather. No fish to be had by us or anyone else for that matter. We couldn't even get anything to steal our bait. Whata great fight took me a while to land it in. HAd my two kids with me this time ..funny thing was that my daughter wanted to potty the whole time I was reeling the monster in...."daddy daddy.....daddy i need to go"....zzzzzzzzzz , daaaaaaaaady"...... zzzzzzzzzzz!!!....it almost spool me out... got about three more turns left on the 706 that was it ..."daddy, daaaaaaaaddddddy" "i need to use the bathroom" zzzzzzzzz!!!! zzzzz!!!!!!...I gave my boy the rod and he faught 'm for a while , good thing is that at that instance my little girl got into the action too and forgot to use the potty for the moment. Ethan got tired after a while and pass me back the rod , sun was going down fast, by then I got half my line back in the spool....I knew the 20lb pompano rig and hook woulnd't last long...at first I thought i was a decent shark, but lasted to long pulling line to be one, then a king was out of the question due to their toothy teeth, cobia?...yeah..I wished..bull red? they dont fight that long I tought..finally got it about 30 yards inside , but couldn't see what it was....The Jack took three long runs almost spooling me out. Finally got to see it on the first braker and it was a huge Jack Cravelle, beautiful fish. Thanks to the guy that help me out with a net and thanks also to the guy that took the only picture on his cell phone. If you get to read this post please send it my way so I can post it. Great time with the kids one more time. :clap

More Flounder, Trout, & Croakers - Destin 10/20/08

Went back to Norriego Point this afternoon for about 3 hours. I found a sweet spot on the Harbor side & hit the Flounder pretty strong. Scott kept trying spots and ended up with mostly weeds & grass. Threw out two rods and waited and waited and waited. I wasn't really happy with the spot I was at, but that's where the family wanted. A man about 200 yards down the beach was fishing a nice cut and caught about 3 while we were there and 4 before we'd come. Got bored watching the rods so I waded out on the sandbar and proceeded to catch some ladies and bluefish on spoons, jigs, and Mirrolures. After about 5 ladyfish something hit my lure and wouldn't let go. It fought about 3 times as hard as a lady and when it got close it jumped. I about fainted when I saw the huge mouth and slivery sides. After a couple more runs and jumps the 80lb mono I was using for a leader was severed and on it's final jump my fish was gone. I couldn't believe I'd hooked a little tarpon off the beach in October! Right before we left the 12' went off and a 18 inch pomp was there for dinner. Great day and awesome fishing!

Someone asked in my other post what rig I'm using. I take my main line. Put two dropper loops and tie the sinker on the end. I put a small orange bead in front of each 1/0 silver circle and whala. Plain and super stealthy. I'm using 17lb P-line by the way.

Thanks

Dead Mans Island

Does any body know about any fish at dead mans island?:banghead

Maybe a dumb question...

I read some of the reports about using fleas as bait. Slight southeast wind, but 3 oz held my sandfleas perfectly still. Had a rod way out to a little before the waves were breaking (sandbar I assume) and another closer in. Both had sandfleas, circle hooks, and beads, Caught zip on the short rod. On the long rod I got two keeper pomps, a cobia about 15 inches long, a tiny jack, a huge crab, and too many catfish. All in all a good day.

I did learn to cast to different places in front of the sandbar. It seemed that the closer I casted to where I caught my first fish the more likely I was to catch another. It was in an area about 10 yards wide it seemed. Maybe I was just nuts, but if I wasn't happy with the placement I would recast. Oh, and the cast were really long since the fish seemed to be farther out. Also I had double hook rigs with one hook being black and one hook being silver. I didn't do it on purpose, that's just all I had. All the fish hit the silver hook. So no more black hooks for me.

Later

Reds at Alabama Point

Me and some fellas went to Alabama point on Sunday night. Fished till dark. Ended up with 1 pomp 13", about a 12 inch cobia, 1 ladyfish, about 8 BIG bluefish, 7537 catfish, and a buzz. hopefully the pomps will start running more soon. So I ordered a 12foot Tica through Dizzy Lizzy to use for reds and other large species from the beach. Well the rod came in and I threw my Salina 80 on it and took it out for a test drive. We got to our spot set up shop and caught some bait. I ended up catching one bull red and a large shark. Im not sure what species it is so if somebody could help me out on that it would be appreciated, I THINK its a blacktip but not positive. Anyway here are the pics. Everything was caught using chartruse 3" Gulp minnow grubs on carolina rigs.

No flounder kept (no ice or ruler, i think they were all too small anyway.?.), Did keep some ladyfish and lizardfish for Jaws tomorrow (that was "fun" trying to hide them under my bag from 3 birds that stayed near us & kept their eyes on them the whole time, lol).

Oh yeah: Circle K on 98 in Destin is now selling E10. We hauled the boat up there tonight and saw it - pulled on out of the parking lot and hauled her on up to the Tom Thumb on Okaloosa Island where there is no < 10% sh*t . . . . and in the process lost the gas cap. So if anyone sees one laying in the middle of 98 it's probably ours! =( Looks like we'll be getting a late start tomorrow. :banghead

One of the first Flounder of the afternoon:

Erosion, it was so steep I thought I was back at Jockey's Ridge (OBX):

Shark bait for tomorrow: =)

here lizard, lizard:

Flounder burying into the sand - I scooted him back into deeper water so he wouldn't get "washed up":

Pomps and reds 10/15

Actually it was only one red, but Telem Piscus (Jon) and I got out this AM for a follow up to Mondays trip with pretty much the same results. Technically he caught it but I kept it anyway.

We were down past portofino, there were plenty of fleas for bait. The current was kind of strong from the east, we used between 4-6oz of lead on the gear and the fish were inside the 2nd bar. Caught 5 reds and a couple of flounder using squid and shrimp. We found a washout in the first trough that went from ankle deep water to about 5 feet and that was where we found them. Didn't really know size limits so we threw them all back. Had a couple that I could never turn that released themselves. These were my first redfish and flounder for that matter so I was pretty excited. Got some pics, trying to figure out how to post them.

Redfish and Pomps 10/13

Myself and Dave (naclh2odave) got up and headed out to Pensacola beach for some surf fishing. We both had nothing better to do today. So what better way to pass the day than a rod in the water with a beer in hand and hope for some fish.
Got to the beach and rods were in the water about 9:30 this morning. The fleas were plentifull and big. Got enough for a few hours in about 2 rakes. We showed up to cloudy skies, wind howling out of the east pelting us with sand, and some rough conditions. But we were determined. About 30 minutes later, Dave's rod goes off and get's a slot red to the beach. A nice one at 26". :letsdrink

I was the catfish king today. I probably caught about 20 damn catfish today. But I finally hooked up on something that didn't seem to fight like a catfish and I pulled in my first ever Pompano. And it was a good fat keeper at 14".

Dave pulled in another pomp shortly after mine. The sun started to finally come out and the wind died down as well and it turned into one nice day.

About this time it was lunch time and we headed over to Peg Legs and ate some oysters and grouper sandwiches.

Headed back to the beach and I again continued to catch catfish after catfish while Dave caught two more keeper pomps.:clap

It was a much better day than sitting at the house. Dave took some pictures of the final catch. I'll have to get him to post them up.

Saturday Report

Got out early this morning.
