Shark Fishing Trip

Hey guys,

I was on this site over the summer when we made one of our trips over to Pensacola for some sharkin...well we are planning to make another trip for the weekend of the 22nd (weather permitting). My self and two other team mates will be making the trip and meeting up with a couple other guys from Louisiana. We should be set up some where close to the state park. If anyone is looking to fish that weekend, let me know. We will hit the beach sometime early saturday morning and fish hard till sunday. Hopefully, some nice sand bars will be around. Thanks.

1 Does it make a different about the lenght of line from your first loop to the lead and the length from the 2 loop to the main line

O.K. so I've explained the reason for different colored beads in a previous post. Here's the rigging box I carry every time. Hooks vary from #2 to 1/0. I also pack the beads in 6mm and 8mm sizes.

How does the neap tide (coming this weekend) affect the pompano fishing? It seems to shut everything else down, but I was curious what you guys think as far as surf fishing is concerned?

i bought some shrimp from joe patti , but did not catch anything, the fishing was just bad that day. the question is can i freeze and reuse the shrimp or will the fish not care for it after freezing. thanks

drilled rotating head

seen a lot of drilled rotating heads on 704/706 reels. from what i remember the 706 rotating head would tweak after a few good fish and rub the spool. isnt drilling out material effecting the structural integrety of the part and asking for a blow up ?

is there that much difference in weight and water drainage to make it worth doing ?

i was interested in drilling out a 710 or712 as they arent as big and think the spool might be stronger. ill find out and check the thickness of the part when i get calipers

today we went after school got out early, when we got there we saw another group in oour hole so we moved down and it was for the better the other group said they had been there all day and had 3 pompanoe...so we thought we would catch 1 or 2, but not 9....yea one after the other we caught 9 pompanoe and lost 2 at the beach, we also caught 2 upper slot reds around 23-25...it was fun and a lil sharkie all on sandfleas

I am not to where I can mess around with it but my idea is, why hasn't a company came up with a lead-free weight, not sand bags, but that can be moulded in the needed shapes, such as for Surf Fishing, the pyramid weight, couldn't someone invent one with no lead, maybe out of a resin with a pigment coated pvc exterior that could possibly be made the color of which ever sandy bottom region it was sold in. And then we would eliminate the lead. I have seen the flourecent pink and other colored ones in the tackle stores, but they are still painted lead. Don't you think if someone knows about resins or heating plastics into moulds with even a stone interior maybe would make a pretty good profit off giving it a try and it worked? Maybe I'm crazy :banghead:banghead:banghead

Spooling reels with Powerpro and mono

I have 2 penn 309s and a penn 9/0. I recently bought 1200m of 60lb braided line and was wondering the best setup for shark fishing.

On the 309s I have 50 yards of mono and 300 yrds power pro on top. I've only done this because I hear it keeps the line from slipping.
Unfortunately 350 yards isn't cutting it. I know I can fit alot more line on the 309s and that's my plan. But is it better to have mono on top as a shock absorber or powerpro on top to limit abrasion? Anything else I should keep in mind?

Or should I just put a ton of braid on the 9/0?

Casting from surf or a kayak?

I am pretty new to Shark fishing on the panhandle and am wondering if most of you guys catching nice sharks are casting from the surf or from a kayak. I am also wondering how far out does your line need to get out to get to the fish? I have heard that the best luck comes from past the second sandbar, but typically how far out is that? Im sorry for the newbie questions but just am curious.....

Sharks: Where are they?

Kinda bummed that the weather is getting colder, won't be able to paddle out baits much longer. I was just wondering where the most successful areas for shark fishing would be at this time of year and the upcoming weeks.
Will they still be in between the 1st and 2nd sandbar? Past the 2nd in deeper water as shallows cool?
In the bay, and where abouts? 3mile?
Will the migratory sharks be coming in close? I heard makos can be caught off the pier.

Question about keeping a Shark while Surf Fishing.

Guys,

I am a pretty good distance away from you guys to the E, or I'd try to meet up with you for some schooling. I am needing to know what you guys do with a Shark right after its caught. I think I've read about the meat spoiling if it isn't processed quickly and don't really know what needs to be done with it so it can be brought home to the table for dinner. I asume that you would gut it, but leave it whole. Is there a gland or something else that should be done to make the meat taste better? Bleeding it out on the shore can't be a very popular thing to do. Should the meat be soaked to get the blood out overnight?Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated. Also, one more time if you guys don't mind: What's the recommended best rig for the small time Shark Fisherman from the "Beach", we don't have a Kayak?"

Haven't fished in 30 years but am getting the bug and want to return to surf fishing on Santa Rosa Island. I feel like a newbie and have no gear. Guess I'll go to WalMart, Academy, or somewhere, grab some gear and get started. What's good to get started? I used to use a 9 foot rod and had an 11 footer also. All the gear is improved from those days, what do you guys recommend? Used to catch whiting, pompano and spanish in the surf. I think the wife might even like to start. Thanks in advance for any advice. I've been lurking around and reading a lot. Great forum, sure didn't have this kind of info back in the day...

This past summer, i started shark fishing the beach with a lot of luck, but the last time I went out, I only got like one bite. Now that the temperatures are changing and stuff, do sharks migrate somehwere else? Aka, are sharks only summer season fishing around here on the beach/surf?

If they are, what are the good things to catch during the winter months? I have read a few threads with reds and pomp being good now, are they more winter time?

ANy info is appreciated cause catching no fish isn't fun.

Berkly Gulp Sand fleas/Mole crabs

Just back from my trip to the gulf. We had a great time in PCB and Okaloosa island. I fished everyday, some morn and night almost each day. Caught a fair amount of fish but nothin big. I did try out the new Berkley Gulp sand fleas/mole crabs. Just a couple of little nibles, no hits:banghead, Used them for 2 hours and nothin one day. Have any of yall had any luck with them? I used them on my 2 hook surf rig. Was this the wrong approach or was the fishing just off last week? Thanks for the input.

Question about Power Pro

I have always used Ande for all my surf rods and make my rigs out of flourocarbon. I'm wondering would Power Pro have any application in surf fishing? If so, should I try and fill the spool and use it just as I load the Ande? Does it cast further or does it slow down the delivery off the spool when trying to give your bait a "zip code"? Any input would really help. I've had a spool of 20# Power Pro for a while now and never knew what I would use it for. I always try to conceal the line and the rig.

Carrying set-up

Does anybody have a set-up that they use besides the pre-fab aluminum carts for carrying their surf fishing gear? I realize that with 6-8 rods and sand stakes, I've got to come up with something besides just my 5-gal bucket...
