I am looking for a used VHF radio. I will probably be going out no more than about 25 miles. From what I have read, I don't want a handheld as my primary radio(only has a range of about 5 miles???). So, I am looking for a dash mount with an antenna. I also understand that the longer the antenna (and further off the water) the more range it will have. So, what should I be looking for? I don't want to spend a fortune on alot of bells and whistles like GPS linkage. I've been looking on ebay and see some for less than $100. Which brands should I look for or stay away from?

Transom mounted troller advice

I'm considering a transom mounted trolling motor on my 19' offshore boat.....this is so i can fish the bay a little better..... I prefer transom mount because the shaft can be shorter, I fish from the back of the boat, and I don't want to stand at the bow in waves, wakes etc.

Certainly the installation has to be on the port side portion of the transom because the depthfinder is on the starboard side and the engine is in the center......

OK. now, with the troller driving from the left, the boat is gonna go in circles unless corrected...........using the engine skag as a tiller and some movement of the trolling motor..........

The question is whether this approach is ever gonna provide a satisfactory solution???? Has anyone here done this before ?????? Ifso, results please....

Trout Fishing

I know this is not really pertainent to saltwater fishing but i'm hoping that some of ya'll might have had experience in this area.

In a couple of weeks I am going to be in Colorado to do a little elk hunting. In the area where we hunt there is a large lake and several good sized streams that look like they would be ideal habitat for trout. Since we always get there a couple of days before the season starts I usually have a little free time and have wondered if it would be worth while to try to see if I could catch some trout.

My question is... will trout bite when the weather is cold ie: highs in the 40s, lows in the teens? If so what is the best technique(s).

What do you consider to be the best "Do it all" Boat?

I know there isn't a perfect boat, and have proved it to myself a couple of times.

The closest I have come is a large Flats Boat. It bass fishes well, handles big water well, and can run close offshore on hand picked days. I will buy another before spring, and was curious if anyone else has tried to find a boat they could do everything in, if so please do tell.

What do you consider to be the best "Do it all" boat?

Severly busted femur says I ain't gonna fish the Gulf like before....plus, I ain't gettin' any younger..... While an occasional gulf trip is possible, bay fishing will be more often.......

I have a 19'CC w/ 115Yamaha, TTop...........about 300 hours.... I like this boat.....

Now the question....

Do I trade this boat for a bay boat OR

put a big trolling motor on my current boat and fish the bay in it........

My grand daughter Allee marches to the tune of a different drum and she often talks me into marching with her. First she "Decided" that I needed to curl my moustache so I'd look like a pirate. I said, ok. No problem. I can grow hair on my lip and in my ears but not so well on my head anymore.

Next she decided I needed to shave my head. Her arguement made sense; a haircut is 8 bucks and another 5 bucks to get to town and back. Sooo, I now shave my head every other day. No problem! Honestly, I don't know why I didn't start this 10 years ago.

A week or so ago, she decided I needed an ear ring to go with the "Pirate look." I didn't want a ring or a stud so I decided to go with a 4/0 SS Circle Hook. She polished one up, sterilized it and tried to get that big sucker through my ear lobe with a Hemostat. It hurt, and bled like heck but didn't go through because the Hemostat was too darn wimpy.

I went to the shop and got 8" Vise Grips. She didn't get the hook clamped securely and managed to botch the hole a bunch when the hook slipped. I clamped the hook securely and this time, it got to bleeding so bad she got sick. Dammmmmmmmmnnnnn, that hurt baaaaaaaddd but the hook wouldn't go through.

About that time, my wife came in and saw the carnage and took over. She drove a large pin through and put something on the back after cutting the pin off with my fishing pliers. She said she wanted it to heal before stretching the hole big enough for the hook.

No, I wasn't drunk and I wasn't high either. I'll admit to being stupid.

The girls who have their XXXX pierced and their YYYYYYY pierced are either tougher than I am or totally wasted when it was done. Don't come near my ZZZZ with anything sharp.

I might go ahead with the circle hook if the hole stretches enough but I'll have a snort or two first.

I took Allee to the airport this morning for a month long visit with her Mom. When I left her at the gate she said, "I expect to see the hook in your ear when I get home."

We'll see.

Rod and Reel advice

I'm looking for some advice on a rod/reel combo to do some fishing in the bay; particularly the area near and around Garcon Pt. bridge and around the ICW side of Gulf Breeze. Most of our fishing is offshore during the summer months and don't know much about this inshore stuff. The smallest gear we have are Penn 704's with 7-7.5' med action rods spooled with 15 - 20 lb. test line. Don't want to spend too much just getting started but want something that will hold up for a fight. I've like the older Penn stuff and have had good luck with some of the Shimano stuff as well, but don't know much about their new gear. I've seen the Penn combos at Wally World with the Captiva series reels, 5000 and 6000 series. Would these be a good start? If not what would you recommend? Again, I'm on a budget but looking for something to catch reds, specs, maybe some founder and sheeps.

Yak FISHING TIP #32 DIY SCUPPER PLUGS

SCUPPER PLUGS (DIY)

Even on the warmest days, my scupper plugs stay in. I do not like to sit in water. Additionally, with scuppers open, salt water gets inside tackle bags/boxes and into reels.

You can buy scupper plugs at almost any Kayak Shop but, for what you get, they seem awfully expensive to me at $6.99 for 2. Most yaks have from 2 to 4 scuppers but I have seen yaks with as many as 8.

Some people do not realize that scuppers have other functions other than to drain water from the yak. Scupper holes are also structural members, supporting the inner hull, maintaining alignment with the outer hull and strengthening the entire structure of the kayak.

Small chunks cut from solid Pool Noodles work as well as any over the counter plugs. One pool noodle will make enough plugs for several yaks, even those with 8 scuppers. Any closed cell foam will work. One caution with foam plugs: Leave enough foam sticking up so you can pull the plug if you need to.

My favorite scupper plugs are made from crutch tips or chair leg tips. Drill 2 tiny holes in the crutch tip for a finger loop made from heavy mono as shown below. Crutch tips cost about $0.35 each.

If you get to your launch site and can't find your scupper plugs, use a popping cork in a plastic bag or even a plastic bag with some sand for plugs.

WIRE LEADER QUESTION

I've had my share of cut offs from toothy critters(kings, jack crevelle, etc), and am frequently tempted to just tie on one of those ready to use wire leaders you can buy ready made, some with plastic coating or red in color. They are heavy and have heard they are too visible to the fish and should be avoided. Your opinions please!!!

CURE FOR FLOPPY OURIGGERS

Ever notice your outrigger poles whipping while they are topped for running in choppy water? This can be a real problem with light duty slide together outriggers. Here is an easy way to minimize this problem.

Make up a short lanyard of Parachute cord with a snap swivel on each end. The length of the lanyard should be a little less than the distance between the outrigger bases. Snap the snaps around the rigger halyards above the pins and raise the pins about ¾ up the poles. This drastically reduces the poles motion, relieving stress on the poles, mounts and gunwales.

our off season project, is to come up with some type of quick disconect flybridge ladder, or two piece fold up. Reason: the base of the ladder screws into the deck and eveytime we have to work on or service the port engine we have to unscrew the base and take the whole ladder off, a real pain in the butt, pluse the deck area is begining to get soft.Any Ideas? of name of good metal fabricator, Baost is in Destin. GOOD DRIVING HABITS

Good driving habits make trailering safer and will darn sure make your trailer last longer.

Remember that your vehicle with trailer in tow weighs several thousand pounds more than normal. Allow for extra stopping distance whether your trailer has brakes or not.

Watch out when changing lanes. Pay special attention to blind spots.

Plan your backing and cornering in tight places like in your drive, parking lots, and at ramps. You can literally "Scrub" a tire off the rim or "Jacknife" your trailer with too tight turns while backing. Hitting overhanging limbs, power lines, and curbs can cause problems other than embarrassment.

Pay careful attention in crowded areas like ramps. Every year someone is killed when they are backed over by a boat trailer.

Slower is better when backing. I see lots of hotshots backing at 30mph. One of these days those guys will pay big time, possibly by killing somebody.

Here is a super strong safety device you might have a need for. I make them in various lengths and strengths for specific purposes. Need a longer or shorter “Kill Switch” lanyard? Paddle leash for your yak? How about a safety line for a rod and reel? These rigs are easy to make, super strong, and doggone convenient. Here is how to make your own. You’ll need 300-600 # test mono (I used 300# in the photos.) and a short length of ½-5/8” dowel as shown below. Insert the mono into one of the holes in the dowel and wrap the mono around the dowel as shown below. Insert the bitter end of the mono thru the second hole and pull tight.[IMG]http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg129/captkenroy/coil.jpg[/IMG]

You will need 2 pots big enough to submerge the entire dowel and mono in. Add about 2” of water into pot one and bring to a boil. Drop the dowel and mono into the pot and boil for 5 minutes. Add several inches of cold water to the 2^nd pot and add crushed ice to make it as cold as possible.

After boiling the mono for 5 minutes, plunge it into the cold water as fast as possible. After a minute or so, remove the dowel and mono and uncoil.

Install whatever you need on the ends of the coiled leash using leader sleeves.

I took my thumb drive to Office Max this morning and had them print out the entire first book. It turned out to be 114 pages if I remember correctly. I had it printed in B/W and the photos looked ok. It would have definitely been better with color photos. Honestly, I impressed my self. I am proud of it.

I'm fishing tomorrow so I probably won't get the rest of it printed until Wednesday.

Hopefully I'll be able to purchase Adobe Acrobat 8 or 9 soon. I need it to finish the E-Books.

$800 is mighty strong for me right now.

REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR YOUR COOLER

Everybody breaks a cooler lid strap from time to time. Replacement is easy--IF YOU CAN FIND SOMEBODY WHO STOCKS THEM or---use a length of 49 strand aircraft cable or 400# test mono. Crimp a solid copper electrical wire lug on each end of the cable or mono and use it to replace the plastic strap. This is a quick and easy fix that will outlast several coolers.

Hinges are easy to make out of Nylon winch strap. Burn the ends to keep strap from raveling then burn holes for the screws.

Latches are a little more difficult because you'll need a couple of boat top snaps and a little bit of winch strap. Burn holes for the screws and snap then attach them to your cooler.

All of these "Homemade" components will outlast the cooler many times over. I'll follow up with "Crack and hole repair in a later tip."

Sometimes fishing tips are handed to me on a silver platter but I don't always recognize them.

Bck in early August, this photo, along with some others was posted on another website.

The other photos in the post showed a fine bunch of yak caught fish. In the text of the post the author mentioned the name of the lure. It is, of course, a Zara Pup.

When I see that many nice fish caught on a lure I do not have in my box, I make sure I have one for next trip. Oh yeah!!! The Pup has been the hottest lure I have used since I started using it, especially when the tide is really low and fish are spooky. It is probably not the best choice for windy days when there is considerable chop but under slick conditions, it has been red hot for me.

This month's Sport Fishing Magazine had an article on Redfish and a study made by Texas Parks and Wildlife was referenced. "The survey indicated that Redfish mostly feed on finfish less than 2" long." This is probably the reason I catch so many Redfish on the Mirodine too.

This morning's project is to turn a half dozen Zara Pup clones and get them ready for fall fishing.

Here is how I keep my clippers handy. That little loop on the front of fishing shirts is a great place for your clippers. Lacking the little loop, snap the snap through a buttonhole on your shirt pocket or shirt front.

I removed a swivel from an Eage Claw size 1/0 safety snap swivel and added it to another 1/0 snap swivel.

Here it is in 3 steps.

Tuna (Cigar Minnow) Tube for kayaks. I need help on this one.

Tuna tubes work. I've seen them in action, first hand. Why wouldn't a similar rig for Cigar Minnows be the catsass for a kayak? Tuna calm down when inserted head first into the tubes and I am sure Cigar Minnows would do the same.

I know how to rig the tubes and I guess mounting them would be dependent on the yak. Certainly you wouldn't have to reach behind you and dip out a fast moving baitfish that you couldn't see.

The tubes and the associated plumbing would be cheap and simple. You'd need varying size flow restrictors so that the tube nearest the pump wouldn't hog all of the flow. Valves would work but would make the system larger and increase the cost a bunch. I'm sure I can handle the flow restrictor problem with simple drilled plates. Hole size could be determined before gluing anything.

My concern is what pump to use. I don't see using a bilge pump because it would require mounting and would cause a lot of drag. I'd definitely want a low amperage pump that would run a long time off a tiny battery. Three hundred gph should take care of ten tubes, providing 1/2gpm each. The pump could sit in the tank well and take its suction through one of the scuppers.

Any ideas?

Bait Boat in Pensacola

I know that the bait boat in Destin is on 80, but I have not been able to find what channel the boat in Pensacola is on. Any help would be great. I am planning a trip out to the edge tom. and sometimes it is quicker to buy than to find. Thanks for the help.

advice on removing rivets from a john boat

I purchased a 12' john boat and want to convert it into a bass boat. My plan is to remove the two bench seats and construct a front fishing deck. The problem I am having is deciding on the best way to remove the rivets without damaging the structure of the boat. Internet research tells me to drill out the rivets, which is fine with me, but I can't find much information on fixing the holes once the rivets are removed. Any advice would be great.

Tip # 104. Snagless Bullminnow/Mudminnow jig. DIY

Here is the jig I fish Bullminnows on most of the time. Also, how to make it and bait it. The hook is a #2/0 Mustad Live Bait hook that I modify as shown. The splitshot is a #2 Wavy Grip. The weedguard is made of 40# test Solar Green Trilene Big Game.

Bend the shank of the hook as shown. Tie SNELL KNOT (Tip # 2) on the shank of the hook. Insert tag end of the mono through the eye of the hook as shown. Clamp split-shot on hook as shown. Trim weedguard to length shown.

Baiting w/ Bullminnow/Mudminnow. In the lower lip and out the top of the upper lip. I bait this way 80% of the time.

When fishing is slow, bait the hook so the minnow is upside down. They struggle mightly to turn over. Sometimes this turns on Flounder that won't bite otherwise. This is deadly on Trippletail and Black Snapper too.

I plan on replacing worn our carpet on a 170 Triton with the White Coating. Just wondering if anyone has used or even heard of the stuff?

Hook and Line Bull Minnows.

Sometimes it is easier to catch Bull Minnows (aka Mud Minnows, Killifish, Killies, etc) on hook and line than cast net them. Tiny potholes, culverts, grass lines and rocky places where cast netting is not feasible work for me. I have a half dozen spots that are usually productive.

I use an old fly rod or fiberglass pole with 4# Fluorocarbon line, a tiny float, tiny sinker and a # 16 long shank hook for the job. Ten minutes is usually enough time to load my well.

Bait of choice? GULP Earthworm in the little bottle shown.

I fish smaller Bull Minnows on a small jig and large ones freelined or on a fish finder rig. Just avout everything eats Bull Minnows. Take some when you fish for Black Snapper. Fish with a tiny circle hook and large split shot. Cast far up current and put your rod in the holder. About the time your line gets straight down, your rod bends over.
